The east and west slopes of the valley are distinctly different, both in soil types and grape varieties grown. The west slope of the valley, known as The Golden Mile is home to over a dozen wineries. It’s slightly cooler climate, which soaks up the morning sun, is ideal for both aromatic whites and balanced, well-structured reds. The eastern slopes of the valley are known as the Black Sage Bench, named after the indigenous sage brush that grows wildly throughout these parts. Here, sandy soils and all-day sun exposure make this an outstanding area for bold flavoured reds and whites alike. The deep, sandy soils are also home to an abundance of desert creatures — the burrowing owl, western rattlesnake, the yellow-bellied racer, western blue-tailed skinks, and more!

As with all of our tours, a picnic lunch consisting of fresh local produce, locally-cured charcuterie, artisan cheese, bread, crackers and spreads is included in the cost of the tour.
